To Try

The word Essay comes from the word Assay which means to try or to attempt. I think this loose and exploratory mindset, is what attracts me to the form - it’s a kind of mental wandering.

The essence of the form is an invitation to the reader to think alongside the writer as she explores a passing thought or an idea and tries to consider what it means for herself, those nearest her, or society at large.

Most of the books I’ve bought later have been collections of essays. This is in part because I’ve lacked the time and attention to read, but also because I love the form.

Some of the posts I’ve enjoyed the most have been those where I’ve had no idea where the writing was going and ended up surprising myself.

Today wasn’t one of those days, But I’ll continue to try.
